My Movie Reviews on Kamera Obskura and Intoy Syokoy ng Kalye Marino by Selena Kyle Chua

The theme for the eighth year of cinemalaya is "Full Force Cinemalaya". This independent film festival composes of 25 new films in different categories namely Shorts A and B, Director's Showcase and New Breed.

Kamera Obskura by Raymond Red

The title "Kamera Obskura" comes from Latin word "Camera Obscura" which means dark room. This movie is actually a silent film about Juan ( played by Pen Medina) travels in the gusali and holds the Kamera Obskura where by using that camera, he will see who the corrupt people are in the society.

When I first saw the trailer of this movie, I became intrigued about it because since this is an unusual film. So, I watched it. My review in this film is that since the film's setting is in 1920s era, and it is also about politics during American occupation, I came to realize that since then there was corruption. This Director's showcase film is a thumbs up for me because even though it is a silent movie (and it's my first time to watch that kind of movie), I still got entertained and understood the movie.

Intoy Syokoy ng Kalye Marino by Lemuel Lorca

The movie revolves around the characters of Intoy (JM De Guzman) and Doray (LJ Reyes), who liked each other since they were little. Intoy works as a mussel (tahong) vendor but Doray becomes a prostitute in order to send her siblings to school.

Actually, some parts of this film has really some sensitive intimate scenes, the setting of this movie is usually in the sea and slum areas to show the reality of the setting. While the story is really good because it shows the hardworking filipinos and even though Intoy didn't have parents anymore, it shows that he can do it by himself, he can work hard. The actors in the movie really portrayed well their respective roles, they made me laugh and cry.

Let's support Cinemalaya

We, especially filipinos, should support our very own independent films. Because independent films always tackles reality and expresses themselves free and independently.
